Cutoff for the asymmetric riffle shuffle

نویسندگان

چکیده

In the Gilbert–Shannon–Reeds shuffle, a deck of N cards is cut into two approximately equal parts which are riffled together uniformly at random. Bayer and Diaconis (Ann. Appl. Probab. 2 294–313) famously showed that this Markov chain undergoes cutoff in total variation after 3log(N) 2log(2) shuffles. We establish for more general asymmetric riffle shuffles one cuts differently sized parts. The value point confirms conjecture Lalley from 2000 10 1302–1321). Some appealing consequences asymmetry always slows mixing strictly faster than separation L∞ mixing.

The cutoff phenomenon for randomized riffle shuffles

We study the cutoff phenomenon for generalized riffle shuffles where, at each step, the deck of cards is cut into a random number of packs of multinomial sizes which are then riffled together.

2 Mixing of Riffle Shuffle via Strong Stationary Times

1.2 Relating the inverse and standard shuffles We now need to relate ∆(t) to ∆(t). We will do this by taking a more general view of shuffles. We will think of a shuffle as a random walk on the symmetric group Sn. The walk is defined by a set of generators G = {g1, . . . , gk} and a probability distribution P over G. (At each step of the walk, we pick a random gi according to P and apply gi to t...

A Rule of Thumb for Riffle Shuffling

We study how many riffle shuffles are required to mix n cards if only certain features of the deck are of interest, e.g. suits disregarded or only the colors of interest. For a wide variety of features, the number of shuffles drops from 3 2 log2 n to log2 n. We derive closed formulae and an asymptotic ‘rule of thumb’ formula which is remarkably accurate.

Clumpy Riffle Shuffles

Sticky or clumpy riffle shuffles appear quite naturally in applications; however, the problem of precisely describing the convergence rate of such modified riffle shuffles has remained open for a long time. In this paper, we develop an alternative family of clumpy shuffles, and analyze their convergence rate. We then provide empirical evidence that our alternative shuffles converge at a similar...

the search for the self in becketts theatre: waiting for godot and endgame

this thesis is based upon the works of samuel beckett. one of the greatest writers of contemporary literature. here, i have tried to focus on one of the main themes in becketts works: the search for the real "me" or the real self, which is not only a problem to be solved for beckett man but also for each of us. i have tried to show becketts techniques in approaching this unattainable goal, base...
